It’s 480 A.D. in a forgotten corner of the Roman Empire, and Chlode—prince of the perpetually bickering Franks—wants two things in his life: to join the Roman army and to grow a beard. But when Rome cuts off the Franks’ livelihood and his uncle sets his city on fire, Chlode realizes he needs to change his priorities. With the Empire on the verge of collapse and enemies closing in, survival depends on how well he can get the Franks to stand together. He must also deal with a family curse, a bloodthirsty god, and a mentally unhinged ghost. Clearly, growing a beard will have to wait.
